Spammers shooting themselves in the foot

15 10 2003

There’s yet another article talking about the “latest” tricks used by spammers. Like adding random character sequences to the subject, seeding the spam with hidden ham and putting weird punctuation into the subject. Not really news, I’ve seen those for months now.

The conclusion of that article isn’t really new news either but puts some fact in nice words:

Spammers probably think that by adding more and more garbage to their messages, they get a higher hit rate. Although the trick may fool some scanners, spammers forget one important thing. No one in his right mind is going to open up a message that reads ‘C;ome v;isit o,ur do-ctors v^aek?’. It could be Swedish for all you know. By talking gobbledygook, spammers have found the perfect way to eliminate themselves.

So while it was pretended that the fight against spam is an endless struggle between good and bad, an endless series of assaults with new arms followed by counter-strikes, it seems like the spammers slowly reach some point where they actually can’t go any further.

But no time for rejoicing yet. Even though they can’t obfuscate their spam any further, they’ll probably look for some other way to get around the filters.
